Modern Foods Sold In The Supermarket Are No More Than A Cocktail Of Chemicals???

To me, I disagree with the statement above. Nowadays, there are not just chemicals in modern food products. Generally, chemicals are the substances that may be harmful to human body if take in excess. The chemicals like aspartame, sodium benzoate and benzoic acid found in food products have their useful roles in food product. In some cases, the use of chemical preservatives is necessary to ensure the safety of a food product. In other words, the chemicals used in food product are a necessity.

By giving some examples, the importance of chemicals in food products will no longer be misunderstood by people. Commonly, we know that there are many frozen food products and canned food are available in the market. Food preservatives and food additives are used in such products. Without them, the food products will not able to provide convenience to people. A food additive is defined as any substance not normally consumed as a food in itself and not normally used as a characteristic ingredient of food whether or not it has nutritive value. Many food additives are naturally occurring and some are even essential nutrients. Also, food additives play an important role in today's complex food supply. Meeting consumer expectations can only be achieved using modern food processing technologies which include the use of a variety of food additives proven effective and safe through long use and rigorous testing.

Besides that, food preservatives carry out a variety of useful functions which we often take for granted. Foods are subjected to many environmental conditions, such as temperature changes, oxidation and exposure to microbes, which can change their original composition. Food preservations play a key role in maintaining the food qualities and characteristics that consumers demand, keeping food safe, wholesome and appealing from farm to fork.

Furthermore, chemicals are added to food products to increase the nutritional values. This purpose is vital since many people hope to get different nutrients in correct proportions which are needed in our daily life. For example, dairy products which can be found in the markets normally are added extra calcium to meet the needs of people.

Actually, a little amount of chemicals in food will not affect severely to people. As our body generates new cells to keep itself in good health, it also attempts to cleanse itself by the elimination of toxins through the skin, lungs, kidneys, liver, and colon. If one organ becomes congested, the others must work harder to keep the system balanced. This is the amaze of the God to create such function to human.

To make sure that consumers are taking safe amount of chemicals, chemical control program is established in facility to have maintenance program that should help maintain a food operation environment that is safe from chemical misuse that could lead to product contamination. This program is essential to ensure that product sent to consumers is safe for consumption. The existence of food laws and regulation also help to control the quantity of chemicals in food.


Another example of modern food is organic food. Organic food is organically grown foods which are safer and more nutritious than foods raised with non-organic methods such as pesticides, non-organic fertilizers, antibiotics and hormones. Many people just don't trust these chemicals and don't want to put them into their bodies. Since virtually all non-organically produced foods contain residues of pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals. The only way to avoid them is to buy organic foods.

In conclusion, modern food are not make up of chemicals only. The representive food is organic food. Even if chemicals are found in food, they are used to increase the nutritional values of food and maintain and make sure food products are safe to consume. Can you imagine that the market is just selling totally fresh food likes fresh vegetables, meat and fruits?
